Cooking for Krishna: Winter Soup, Potatoes & Veggies

This is the first in a series of cooking videos presented by the ISKCON Toronto Blog.

“Cooking for Krishna” will feature cooking demonstrations and recipes for sumptuous vegetarian items which we offer to Lord Krishna. Once offered, these preparations become “prasadam”, or sanctified food!

In this first video our cook, Shashank Parkhi along with his wife Satyabhama devi dasi, shows us how to make a wonderful winter soup, mashed potatoes and buttered vegetables.

A question about growing plants in the winter ?

Ok. I live in MI which gets extremely cold during the winter. Sunlight only last for 8 hours as well. I have a few plants I am growing indoors, a foxglove for example. They need heavy sunlight. I was told some sort of lamp or lightbulb could substitute. Do you know exactly what it is called and the price range? thanks

Grow lights - fairly common. They are different b/c they produce the entire spectrum of light vs. regular light bulbs.
Place them as close to the plant as you can. Have aluminum foil under the plant to reflect as much light as you can.
You cannot fool mother nature so they probably will look a little weary around late January early February but don’t fret. Yellow leaves and dropping leaves will probably occur. No worries.
Also keep them warm but avoid a heater vent from blowing directly on them - it will dry them out from the leaves down.
Also they really don’t require much water so DO let the soil dry out before watering. Also no fertilizer.
Your basically limping them along until next spring.
